Winter is by far my least favorite month. With the frigid temps and needing to bundle up before leaving the house, let’s just say I’m more than ready for spring. The winter weather also does a number on my complexion: Less moisture in the air causes skin to become dry and cracked. Thankfully, a skincare company called Dionis is here to save the day with beauty products that are made using a unique moisturizing ingredient: goat milk.
We spoke with board-certified dermatologist Onyeka Obioha, MD, to learn more about the benefits of adding goat milk to your skin care routine. Plus, she offers advice on how often to use products like the Dionis goat milk skincare line this winter for the best results!
Is goat milk good for the skin?
Goat milk might not be the first ingredient that comes to mind when thinking about what’s in your body lotions, hand creams, or lip balms. But Dr. Obioha says goat milk is an ideal skincare ingredient — here’s why:
Goat milk contains saturated and unsaturated fats, which help lock in moisture into the skin during dry, cold weather.
A high concentration of lactic acid makes it a great humectant (or moisturizing agent).
Goat milk contains probiotics to help support the skin’s microbiome (the outer layer of the skin). An imbalanced skin microbiome can trigger and exacerbate inflammatory skin conditions, such as eczema.
Goat milk is perfect to use on all types of skin, including sensitive skin, because it contains organic compounds, such as triglycerides and alpha hydroxy acid. “It works for normal and dry skin as it is jam-packed with triglycerides, which helps with skin elasticity,” Dr. Obioha explains. “And it works for oily and combination skin due to its high lactic acid content, which is an alpha hydroxy acid that gently exfoliates and removes dead skin cells.”
With regular use, the natural acids and compounds in goat’s milk can help repair cracked winter skin — and the Dionis goat milk skincare line is a great one to try.
Where to Buy Dionis Goat Milk Skincare
Dionis sells their goat milk beauty products on their website (Dionisgmskincare.com) and in stores. My personal favorite out of their product lineup is the Creamy Coconut and Oats Goat Milk Body Lotion . It’s creamy and thick, yet absorbs perfectly into the skin, keeping it hydrated for most of the day. Plus, it has a delicate coconut smell which means that it can layer nicely with other scented products from Dionis.
Dr. Obioha recommends using goat milk moisturizing products whenever your skin feels dry. And while it could take up to eight weeks to fully heal flaking or cracked skin, you’ll be able to feel the difference in a few days.
