‘Tis the season for blissful sweet treats. This is personally my favorite time of year to end each day with a book, a blanket, and a cup of delicious hot cocoa.
Lately, my social media feeds have been flooded with videos of hot chocolate bombs — which are sort of like bath bombs, but for your mug. Essentially, a hot chocolate bomb is a solid chocolate ball that gets dropped into a mug of hot water or milk and instantly turns into a warm cup of decadent hot chocolate. To say the least, this new trend has intrigued me. And while you can go out and buy hot chocolate bombs, I went scouring the internet and found out that it’s actually super easy to make them on your own.
All you need to make your own hot chocolate bombs is a semi-sphere silicone mold and three ingredients you may already have in your kitchen — mini-marshmallows, milk chocolate chips, and hot cocoa powder.
We found this recipe on Real Simple, and trust us, it is really simple! To make your hot chocolate bombs, all you have to do is heat your chocolate until it’s mostly melted in the microwave, stirring occasionally, about 15 seconds. Next, line the sides of your mold with a thin layer of the chocolate and put it in the freezer for five to 10 minutes, to allow the chocolate to set.
Once solid, remove the spheres from the mold and transfer them to a working surface. Fill half of the spheres with your hot cocoa powder and mini marshmallows. Run a plate under hot water until it’s warm and place the open edges of the empty semi-spheres on the plate until they begin to melt slightly. Use these to cover the hot chocolate-filled halves, then place them in the freezer to chill before serving. That’s it!
