In a not-so cryptic tweet, Halsey let her followers in on what would be a new look. “I love be bald,” she wrote — and just a few hours later, she debuted a fresh buzzcut with a TikTok video and a flying, long, brown wig.

Over on TikTok, Halsey’s clip included a lipsync (because TikTok) and a dramatic hair flip that revealed her short hair underneath the wig. Halsey’s had similar styles in the past. Back in 2015, she debuted her very first buzzcut and in 2016, she recreated the look for a Nylon magazine cover.
“Hair has also been a big indicator of racial issues in my life,” she said of the cut, according to Billboard. “It’s one of the ultimate symbolic struggles for women of color. Shaving my head was important to me because I needed to be able to prove that I could still love myself if I did it.”
The singer also explained that there wasn’t a specific reason for the change. In a follow-up tweet, she said that she planned on growing her hair until it was “healthy and long” before going short again. It appears that she reached that goal, because she went and did it.
“I was growing it out for so long and I told myself I wouldn’t shave it till I saw what it was like healthy and long and then I saw it healthy and long and said ‘mm this is nice but I miss bald. and then so I did it!” she wrote.
