On Sunday, January 23, representatives for Thierry Mugler announced via his Instagram that the designer had died. The message, which was also written in French, read, “We are devastated to announce the passing of Mr Manfred Thierry Mugler on Sunday January 23rd 2022. May his soul Rest In Peace.”
No further information about the designer’s death has been released at this time.
Mugler began his career in the early ’70s in Paris at the fashion house Karin. His work was marked by broad shoulders and a penchant for theatricality. In particular, Mugler’s work was noticeably inspired by the 1940s in its tailoring. The mix of sharply defined pieces and futuristic influences set the designer’s work apart from his contemporaries.
Throughout his career, Mugler dressed some of the biggest stars from every generation including Naomi Campbell, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Cardi B, Beyoncé, and more. While he retired in 2003, he returned to designed in 2019 to create Kim Kardashian‘s Met Gala 2019 gown, known as the “Wet Dress.”
